Choosing a Siding Contractor on the Main Line
By Realistic Exterior · Updated
Choose a siding contractor by comparing the complete wall system: the siding, water-management details, trim, repairs and written warranty—not just the color or price.
Start with the condition of the wall
Before selecting new siding, look for soft trim, staining around windows, loose panels and evidence of water entry. Replacing the surface alone will not solve a leak behind it. Ask how the contractor will inspect the existing sheathing and document any concealed damage after removal.
On Main Line homes, original trim and additions may need different detailing. Discuss which architectural details will stay and how the new installation will meet existing windows, doors and rooflines.
Compare materials and maintenance
Vinyl, fiber cement and wood have different installation and maintenance requirements. Ask to see samples in daylight and discuss cleaning, painting where applicable, and the appearance of corners and seams. A material that looks appealing in a small sample may read differently across a whole elevation.
Request the exact product and profile in the proposal. The manufacturer's installation instructions should guide fastening, clearances and accessories; an attractive finish is not a substitute for correct installation.
Get water-management details in writing
Ask how the water-resistive barrier, window and door flashing, and transitions will be handled. Caulk is not a substitute for properly detailed flashing. Clarify whether gutters, downspouts, exterior fixtures and trim are included or need separate work.
- Specify the siding brand, profile, color and trim.
- Clarify removal and concealed-damage pricing.
- Ask about flashing and wall drainage.
- Verify registration, insurance and warranty terms.
